Description Daniel Mettler 2002-03-10 09:57:09 UTC
i do not know if there will ever be a web section for gentoo eye candies. if so,
feel free to use these splash screen images. an extract of the msg i sent to
gentoo-users:

[cut]

thus here are some more grub splash screens based on the "powered by" images i
shamelessly ripped from http://www.gentoo.org/index-graphics.html (have i
already told that i am really addicted to these nice, rendered 3d gentoo
logos? :)

http://www.icu.unizh.ch/~mettlerd/gentoo/files/powered_by_gentoo_linux.xpm.gz
(24 kb)
http://www.icu.unizh.ch/~mettlerd/gentoo/files/powered_by_gentoo_linux_small.xpm.gz
(12 kb)
http://www.icu.unizh.ch/~mettlerd/gentoo/files/powered_by_gentoo_linux_big.xpm.gz
(48 kb)

just put them in your /boot/grub/ and adjust /boot/grub/menu.lst
accordingly

here's a tgz archive containing the above files and the gimp
source files:

http://www.icu.unizh.ch/~mettlerd/gentoo/files/powered_by_gentoo_linux-all_in_one.tar.gz
(672 kb)

now the (important) disclaimer:

* they are not official

* free use/whatever (as long as the rights of the "powered by"
images are not violated -> i do not know about those rights.
anybody?)

* these splash screens do not really look as cool as the could
as i had to reduce the color palette to 14 colors and the
resolution is limited to 640x480. according to
/usr/portage/sys-apps/grub/files/grub-0.91/grub-0.91-splashimagehelp.patch
this should be the maximum allowed, if not please drop me a line.

* there is a problem with the default color of the grub menu
(currently one can not or hardly see which menu entry is
selected when using these splash screens). somehow i can't make
grub's 'color' option work on my box.

(see bug report http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1046)

regards

dan

Maybe we should add these as an option, but I kinda like the default purple boot
screen we have.

Grub hates my VIA chipsets so I have no way of testing. Punting.

Trying to clean out the docs-depricated so that I can close the catergory ...
