Description Nes Yarug 2005-08-26 03:52:07 UTC
I receive an error when I try to modprobe the fglrx module. The error message is:
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.12-gentoo-r9/video/fglrx.ko): No
such device

This is the output from dmesg:
[fglrx:firegl_init] *ERROR* Device not found!

I have emerged the ati-drivers:
[ebuild R ] media-video/ati-drivers-8.14.13-r2 +opengl 0 kB

This is the relevant output from lspci -v:
0000:01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS480 [Radeon

I have configured X (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) with fglrxconfig. then when I try to
start X, it fails with the following error:
X Window System Version 6.8.2
Release Date: 9 February 2005

Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.12-gentoo-r9 x86_64 [ELF]

Could it be that fglrx fails because the device is not know to the driver (the
unknown chipset message)? But, according to the change logs for the ati-drivers
support was added for the integrated graphic adapters in 8.13.4:
*ati-drivers-8.13.4 (25 Jun 2005)

  25 Jun 2005; Luca Barbato <lu_zero@gentoo.org> +ati-drivers-8.13.4.ebuild:
New Xpress 200 driver, p.masked as usual since I cannot test it

Any insight appreciated,
Thanks,
Nes

ps: If I modify the xorg.conf generated by fglrxconfig and change the driver
from fglrx to vesa, I can start X.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge at-drivers (latest version ati-drivers-8.14.13-r2)
2. modprobe fglrx
3.

Actual Results:
Error message, fglrx module not loaded.

Expected Results:
No errors, fglrx module loaded.

Please try the currently masked .16.20 I'll unmask it as soon I could figure out
how to avoid the configuration issues too many people are having
Comment 2 Nes Yarug 2005-08-27 08:58:17 UTC
Okay, emerged 8.16.20 and that allowed me to load the gflrx module. Thanks.

USE="opengl" emerge /usr/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-8.16.20.ebuild

I'll close this bug.
