Just installed 1.4 from scratch. Gnome does not run from xdm or gdm.
If i run it from plain startx, it runs.
Checking the logs it says:
"Failed to match any font. This could be due to
a broken Xft configuration, or if you run XFree 4.1.0 due to a bug in
libXrender. For more information about this, read
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68030"

This worked ok in 1.2, and since this is xfree 4.2.1 i am worried.
If i go to gdm and just run a failsafe xterm and run gnome-session after
doing GDK_USE_XFT=0 then gnome runs.
 
So, any suggestions?

After almost an hour of hacking, i fixed this bug by running mkfontdir on every 
single font dir.

Weird.
