Description Matt Ball 2005-08-21 19:59:04 UTC
After running LiveCD 2005.1 for x86 (date 2005-08-10), I was unable to see the
login screen or Gnome interface on my Radeon 9200 card through a DVI cable. A
regular VGA cable worked with the same set-up.

The boot-up screen worked fine. However, after LiveCD started GDM, the monitor
lost signal. This persisted through the auto-login 10 seconds later into Gnome.
I was able to find a little more information by following this procedure:

- Pressed Right Mouse Button
- Pressed 'E' to open up a terminal
- Typed 'sudo passwd root'
- Typed and confirmed a password
- Typed 'su -'
- Typed '/etc/init.d/sshd start'
- On a separate computer, used ssh to log into LiveCD computer ('ssh
root@192.168...')
- typed 'less /var/log/messages'
- Examined messages and found following information:

It looks like the 'fglrx' (ATI's FireGL) module failed to load. Interestingly,
I've had similar problems on my normal Gentoo install. Here are a couple more
error messages:

Comment 2 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-21 06:39:20 UTC
Were you able to try the 2006.0 CD and did it work with the newer release?
Comment 3 Matt Ball 2006-07-27 06:40:08 UTC
I ultimately solved this problem by buying an nVidia graphics card (GeForce FX5200). So, unfortunately, I can't say whether the ATI graphics card works with Gentoo 2006.0 live install.
Comment 4 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-27 09:02:10 UTC
That sounds like the best solution I have ever heard... ;]

Thanks for letting me know.
