Description Jan Kundrát (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-08-21 06:15:19 UTC
Some docs (genkernel.xml, gentoo-sparc-quickinstall.xml, migration-to-2.6.xml,
kernel-upgrade.xml, diskless-howto.xml, handbook/hb-install-x86-kernel.xml,
handbook/hb-install-mips-kernel.xml, handbook/hb-install-ppc64-bootloader.xml,
handbook/hb-install-ppc64-kernel.xml, handbook/hb-install-hppa-kernel.xml,
handbook/hb-install-alpha-kernel.xml, handbook/hb-install-sparc-kernel.xml,
not counting 200x.y handbooks - see $URL) still mention copying System.map
to /boot which is (according to dsd) not needed anymore.

But maybe some of them are required
(handbook/hb-install-ppc64-bootloader.xml?)...
Comment 1 Xavier Neys (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-08-21 15:59:09 UTC
FYI, handbooks<2005.1 will not be updated.
I'd be happy to get rid of those cp's I've never ever done :)
Comment 2 Shyam Mani (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-09-22 22:23:55 UTC
Keeping this bug for tracking purposes?
Comment 3 Jan Kundrát (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-09-23 05:48:21 UTC
Well, I'll do that :-).
Comment 4 Jan Kundrát (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-10-02 06:47:08 UTC
Kernel folks, could you please check those if the System.map is really useless?

Those two files look suspicious:
doc/en/handbook/hb-install-ppc64-bootloader.xml
doc/en/genkernel.xml

And SPARC handbook explicitely says "don't forget to copy"...

Comment 5 John Mylchreest (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-10-06 11:03:53 UTC
except for external-to-kernel symbol debugging yes.
completely useless :)

it should never be needed on 2.6 except for extreme cases. and even then it
doesnt need to be in /boot
Comment 6 Jan Kundrát (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-10-06 12:59:00 UTC
Fixed in CVS, thanks ;-).
