Description Michael Sullivan 2005-08-18 05:55:11 UTC
When viewing messages in the message window of Evolution 2.2.3 using the arrow
keys sometimes results in undesirable behavior. Example: Giving focus to the
message window at the top of the message and pressing down arrow to scroll down
scrolls the message to the very bottom. When this occurs pushing the up arrow
has limited effect because the message window snaps to the bottom of the message
again. Usually when this happens there is a large blinking cursor in the
message window (which should be read-only and therefore not have a cursor.)

Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1. View a message in Evolution that is to long to display entire message in
message window without scrolling.

2. Give focus to message window.
3. Press the down arrow key.

Actual Results:
Message window jumps to the bottom of the message, skipping parts of the message
between the beginning and the end (of the message)

Expected Results:
The message window should have scrolled down one line at a time (like an
ordinary multi-line textbox.)

If relevant, when this malfunction occurs I usually have the following windows
open: nautilus, evolution (obviously) and gnome-terminal, but this will occur
when I have open only evolution.

I have this problem too - and infact, Evolution's handling of tables in HTML
email seems to have become totally broken too :(

(Has the component that evolution uses to render its output been updated, and
evolution hasn't yet been updated to match? Is this related to the latest Gnome
builds which are still masked for testing?)

I find that cursor keys are broken when view messages in their own window:
Initially a cursor which is the same height as the entire message flashes at the
very left-hand edge of the message window, in the grey border. Pressing any
cursor key now jumps to the very bottom of the message. Pressing any cursor key
now causes the display to "bounce" around the bottom of the message, as if the
display is trying to move upwards, but then gets reset back to the bottom.

This happens in text or HTML modes.

In text modes, you can then click anywhere on the body of the message and
scrolling then works correctly.

In HTML mail with tables, the dotted outlines of all the parent cells of the
current cell/table are drawn. Trying to scroll up or down too quickly (e.g.
evolution is relatively slow to draw these table outlines, and when you move
with cursor keys they lag) causes evolution to crash :(

In HTML email with tables, the only way to navigate currently is to use the
mouse to scroll the scrollbar - cursor key navigation causes jumps, ugly table
borders, and crashes.

please upgrade to evolution-2.6 ( just marked stable with GNOME 2.14 ) and re-open the bug if you can still reproduce it.
