Flat profiles have been removed from the tree, users with old portage versions  
cannot upgrade without instructions.  
  
in order to upgrade from a portage <2.0.51 to a cascaded profile one needs to   
emerge --sync, link /etc/make.profile to one of the flat profiles 
in /usr/portage/profiles/obsolete/  
 
emerge portage  
 
link to a cascaded profile
