Description Nguyen Thai Ngoc Duy (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-08-12 01:40:54 UTC
I crashed my portage and emerge stopped working. It's normal. But i suggest we'd
add troubleshooting/recovery section to the handbook, some guidelines to help
users solve critical problems like this. I didn't see any documents refer to
portage_rescue. Gentoo x86 tips and trick have some guidelines for
malfunctioning installation when installing, not when using. Portage recovery is
one problem. Another may be accidentally removed /var/db/pkg ... What do you think?
Comment 1 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-08-12 01:43:38 UTC
I think this can't be done in a guide but using a knowledge base of some sort.
See http://dev.gentoo.org/~swift/gentoo/proposals/troubleshooting.html for a
proposal that we can't deliver currently.

BTW, a good start would be to identify a few recovery items you can think of and
provide solutions already for them. Building a KB without content is stupid :)

You know what? I'll bite... start with this KB I've been thinking about for more
than a year now.

I've had a local portage-related troubleshooter/link collection for quite some
time. I've started to put it on my dev space. Not much, but a start. Most of it
are forum FAQs already.

ok. I didn't mean that. But that is over-great :D I think we should close this
bug as WONT FIX and discuss further on gentoo-doc@ or gentoo-dev@ then :)
Comment 7 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-08-12 07:25:19 UTC
If you don't mind I'll keep it open so that I can fully work this out. Since
I'll probably have to decrease my online development time in the near future it
might be interesting for me to dedicate time on such a project :)

I've started a topic on forums.gentoo.org which contains some suggestions about organising KB, may be you'll find some nice ideas there.

Last time I stopped an emerge run with ^C I was reported for Information
of portage recovery and where to find a minimum portage to run recovery of portage.

Please check this.

Maybe this Information can be included in the Handbook?
