"emerge libgnomeprint" returns error "cannot find -lpopt". a comment in forums suggests that dev-libs/popt be added as a hard DEPEND for gnome-base/libgnomeprint. however, a current popt is already installed. re-installing popt with "emerge popt" solves the problem. the libgnomeprint compile error follows: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -shared .libs/gnome-print-cups.o .libs/gnome-print-cups-transport.o -Wl,--rpath -Wl,/var/tmp/portage/libgnomeprint-2.10.3/work/libgnomeprint-2.10.3/libgnomeprint/.libs -L/usr/lib64 /usr/lib64/libgmodule-2.0.so -ldl /usr/lib64/libgnomecups-1.0.so -lcups -lssl -lcrypto -lnsl /usr/lib64/libgobject-2.0.so /usr/lib64/libglib-2.0.so /usr/lib64/libxml2.so -lpthread -lz -lm -lpopt ../../.libs/libgnomeprint-2-2.so -march=k8 -Wl,--export-dynamic -Wl,-rpath -Wl,/usr/lib -Wl,-soname -Wl,libgnomeprintcups.so -o .libs/libgnomeprintcups.so /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.3/../../../../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: cannot find -lpopt collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[4]: *** [libgnomeprintcups.la] Error 1 make[4]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/libgnomeprint-2.10.3/work/libgnomeprint-2.10.3/libgnomeprint/modules/cups' make[3]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[3]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/libgnomeprint-2.10.3/work/libgnomeprint-2.10.3/libgnomeprint/modules' make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/libgnomeprint-2.10.3/work/libgnomeprint-2.10.3/libgnomeprint' make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/libgnomeprint-2.10.3/work/libgnomeprint-2.10.3' make: *** [all] Error 2 Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. # emerge info Portage 2.0.51.22-r2 (default-linux/amd64/2005.0, gcc-3.4.3, glibc-2.3.5-r0, 2.6.9-gentoo-r4 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.9-gentoo-r4 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 FX-51 Processor Gentoo Base System version 1.6.13 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.11 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.5 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r10 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.18-r1 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=k8" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=k8" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="amd64 X alsa arts avi berkdb bitmap-fonts cdr crypt cups curl eds encode esd f77 fam foomaticdb fortran gdbm gif gnome gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 imlib ipv6 java jpeg kerberos libwww lzw lzw-tiff mozilla mp3 mpeg mpi ncurses nls ogg opengl pam pdflib perl png python quicktime readline samba sdl spell ssl tcpd tetex tiff truetype-fonts type1-fonts usb userlocales vorbis xml2 xpm xv zlib userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, MAKEOPTS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY

dev-libs/popt is already part of libgnomeprint's dependencies. This was a local problem in your machine.
in that case, could this bug be moved to a more relevant aree? popt was already installed on my local machine. maybe this is a portage bug.
