Xsu (http://xsu.freax.eu.org) is a graphical interface for 'su - username -c command' in GNOME. Say you have a program that needs root privileges to run, but you don't want it to be SUID. You could either fire up a terminal window and su to run it, but it's much more handy to have it pop up a window asking for a password for the command. For example, I frequently use the packet sniffer ethereal. This requires root to function properly. So when I click the ethereal icon the following command is run ; xsu -u root -m "Ethereal requires root privileges" -i /usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-monitor.png -c "ethereal" -t "Ethereal" This pops up a window with a nice picture and a message, prompting me for a password. It sure makes life at least a little bit easier :) I suggest x11-misc
