I've found several issues in $SUBJECT, feel free to comment/commit (patch will be attached): 1) Portage will store files under /etc as ._cfg0000_<name> only if it would overwrite some file 2) Aborting etc-update won't rollback earlier changes (possible missunderstanding) 3) Adding info about $PKGDIR

(In reply to comment #0) This looks really good--it really does clarify exactly what happens. I think this patch would definitely help new users understand the behavior of Portage and its associated tools.
Based on the positive feedback expressed on #gentoo-doc :-), I'll commit it (with some changes, of course :-]).
