apparently zlib support in php is optional.  php and mod_php don't seem to have
use flags for zlib though.  Someone said that they build support by default.

zlib is required for PEAR/PECL packages to work so making it optional is not an
option IMHO.

Hi,

This will shortly be fixed in the Gentoo PHP Overlay [1].  We hope to get these
packages into Portage shortly, but in the meantime, the overlay is available for
general use.
