See relevant threads on gentoo-dev[1] and gentoo-portage-dev[2] Add a pkg_warn() function that emerge can then call to display warning information during an emerge -pv <package> The warning would be used to print out upgrade path information along with known problems with the package. This is useful prior to installation so that an administrator can have knowledge of difficulties prior to installation and prepare for them. This is planned for CVS ( per Jason ). Not sure if patching against current cvs would be at all useful, or to wait until more of the new code is done ( ie is doebuild being gutted? I thought so... ). Still talking. Brian has already brought up issues with it. (It won't be forgotten about without a bug either)
Talked about on gentoo-portage, encouraging decent changelog use and using current -l feature to give output.
