Please see forum thread 19194.  The problem seems to exist on fresh installs.  
The /etc/fonts/fonts.conf does not contain any valid font directories which 
causes gnome2 xft to fail.

Afaik i know this problem should be fixed with fontconfig-2.0-r2 .
