Enabling Xft in the fltk ebuild breaks the build, probably due to changes in 
the Xft part of Xfree 4.2.1.  Removing --enable-xft from the ebuild script 
results in a successful build.

there's some changes coming to xfree's ebuild that should sort this out

fltk-1.1.2 is now in portage.  It includes Xft-2.0 related fixes and many 
other bug fixes mostly in the fluid application.

Can you please test 1.1.2 and let me know if you still have xft related
