could you please test with CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O2 -pipe" please.
Comment 5 Jory A. Pratt 2005-07-24 14:45:36 UTC
could you please test with CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O2 -pipe" please. Also what
version of mozilla-launcher do you have installed.
Comment 6 Arne Bargheer 2005-07-24 14:50:42 UTC
I was using mozilla launcher 1.41 (I have just upgraded to 1.42, that didn't
change anything as far as I could tell).

I will try compiling with the -O2 option and report back asap.
Comment 7 Arne Bargheer 2005-07-24 15:32:58 UTC
OK it still fails when I set CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O2 -pipe"

I get the following error when trying to start thunderbird (it looks like the
same error to me):

---
(thunderbird-bin:14033): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_property_get(): length value has
wrapped in calculation (did you pass G_MAXLONG?)
/usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 116: 14033 Segmentation fault      "$mozbin"
"$@"
thunderbird-bin exited with non-zero status (139)
---
Comment 8 Aron Griffis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-07-24 19:30:45 UTC
CFLAGS shouldn't really matter since all the mozilla ebuilds restrict
optimization to a max of -O2 and strip other cflags:

    # Set optimization level based on CFLAGS
    if is-flag -O0; then
        mozconfig_annotate "from CFLAGS" --enable-optimize=-O0
    elif [[ ${ARCH} == hppa ]]; then
        mozconfig_annotate "more than -O0 causes segfaults on hppa"
--enable-optimize=-O0
    elif [[ ${ARCH} == alpha || ${ARCH} == amd64 || ${ARCH} == ia64 || ${ARCH}
== ppc64 ]]; then
        mozconfig_annotate "more than -O1 causes segfaults on 64-bit (bug 33767)" \
            --enable-optimize=-O1
    elif is-flag -O1; then
        mozconfig_annotate "from CFLAGS" --enable-optimize=-O1
    else
        mozconfig_annotate "mozilla fallback" --enable-optimize=-O2
    fi

    # Now strip optimization from CFLAGS so it doesn't end up in the
    # compile string
    filter-flags '-O*'

    # Strip over-aggressive CFLAGS - Mozilla supplies its own
    # fine-tuned CFLAGS and shouldn't be interfered with.. Do this
    # AFTER setting optimization above since strip-flags only allows
    # -O -O1 and -O2
    strip-flags
Comment 9 Arne Bargheer 2005-07-31 15:08:23 UTC
problem has stayed there with 1.0.6-r3.
Also I just noticed that in the end of the compilation I there is this error
message:

Updating thunderbird chrome registry...
/usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 581: 10100 Segmentation fault      regxpcom
E: regxpcom exited with status: 139
Comment 10 Aron Griffis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-08-03 07:04:30 UTC
Sounds like you have some system issues that aren't related to mozilla. Looking
at your emerge info, I'm guessing that you have distcc or ccache issues
resulting in bad binaries. Maybe one of the machines you're distributing to has
a different compiler version?

How about doing this:
  FEATURES="-ccache -distcc" emerge -e mozilla-thunderbird
Comment 11 Arne Bargheer 2005-08-03 23:20:25 UTC
Thank you for the suggestions Aron
I have no machines that I am distributing to lately ... I had another P4 that I
distrbuted to at one point, but not while compiling for thunderbird v.1.06

The emptytree emerge command you suggest wants me to emerge 92 packages from the
beginning ... that might be a little overkill.

I have tried remerging a few packages, including Thunderbird, with the Features
you suggested, and still get the same seg-fault.

Btw. this still is there with 1.0.6-v4
I will keep on trying to compile select packages with the Features you suggested
to see if it should help.
Comment 12 Arne Bargheer 2005-08-13 15:13:14 UTC
OK it seems that I have now fixed this even though I am not totally sure how.
Also I am not sure what status to give this bug now ... I'll leave that to you guys.

I have tried recompiling diffrent things on the system.

revdep-rebuild gave me an idea that something was wrong with mdbtools ... I
tried emerging it again but it didn't compile.
So I did
emerge -uD app-office/mdbtools
And now it looks like thunderbird starts correctly even though I still get the
error:

(thunderbird-bin:25057): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_property_get(): length value has
wrapped in calculation (did you pass G_MAXLONG?)

But thunderbird seems to run just fine now (some problems with my
~/.thunderbird/ but that is no wonder as I have messed quite a bit around with
this trying to fix this problem.

The emerge command above emerged 17 packeges ... here's from my emerge.log
