I tried to install Gentoo into a chrooted environnement on my debian.
I tried a "emerge system" and ... make error ! Perl didn't compile.
I looked into the bad makefile and I saw some French word.
My LC_ALL was fr_FR, I did a LC_ALL="" and the error disappeared !

So if you want perl compile : look at your locales...
