Description Adam Jakubek 2005-07-03 03:25:24 UTC
There is a problem with NLS support in man-1.6. It keeps crashing while trying
to display messages (like 'Formatting page, please wait'). This happens only
when nls is on and when locales are non-english. Backtrace indicates that
segfault occurs in vfprintf called from gripe() function in gripes.c. It's
caused by invalid string returned from getmsg(). This function reads message
catalogs and returns translated string based on numeric MSGID. It seems however,
that man message catalog in invalid. In version 1.6 several new strings were
added randomly in english catalog file, changing most MSGIDs. Unfortunately
other catalog files were not updated. This causes a mismatch in message ids,
while man expects translations to be synchronized with english version. For
example, polish translation for 'Formatting page, please wait' should be
"Formatuje stronę, poczekaj...\n", but getmsg() will return "Nie mogę otworzyć %
s do zapisu.\n". The '%s' sequence will cause invalid memory access and a
segfault.
Perhaps nls support in man should be disabled until all message catalogs are
updated or someone fixes message catalog building. It's quite probable, that
even reordering new strings to the end of english message catalog would be
sufficient as a workaround. This bug will still exist however, and man will
generate error messages about missing translations.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.build man with nls support
2.set locales to non-english
3.run man on any page (man man)

Actual Results:
segmentation fault

Expected Results:
displayed man page
