Description Rob Brown 2005-06-13 03:53:25 UTC
I have installed HPLIP (after removing HPOJ and HPIJS). The HP Printing Manager
works, I can see ink levels etc, and scanning through Kooka and XSane works.
Printing does not work: when trying to print anything, there is no response from
the printer at all, although CUPS says a print job started. A hpijs process is
started which takes up all CPU time. If I kill the hpijs process, CUPS reports
that the print job completed successfully.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.remove HPOJ from default runlevel, stop hpoj, and emerge -C hpoj and hpijs
2.remove HPIJS printer from CUPS
3.emerge HPLIP
4.add hplip to default runlevel. Start hplip (both daemons start OK)
5.(I rebooted at this point, for an unrelated reason)
6.Try to print anything (I've tried test pages from HP printing manager and
CUPS, text from Kate, a document from OOo Writer)

Actual Results:
No response from printer. A hpijs process was started. top reports that the
hpijs process is taking up 97% of CPU time.

Expected Results:
Print a page on the printer.

No significant other programs running.

Computer setup: AMD64 CPU in 32-bit mode, 1GB RAM, Via K8T800 Pro motherboard. I
haven't got EHCI running because it always locks up my USB, so I'm running USB
at 12Mbps. HP PSC1350 all-in-one.

**** Please Note ****
After hplip wouldn't work, I re-emerged hpijs without unmerging hplip. Now
printing works! So there might be a problem with the hpijs component of hplip. I
get a warning when doing emerge -u that hpijs blocks hplip, but it doesn't worry
me too much - if an update to hplip comes out, I'll unmerge hpijs before
updating hplip.

Comment 1 Christian Apolloni 2005-06-13 11:29:35 UTC
Got the same problem whith the same printer model using hplip-0.9.3.
hplip-0.9.2 seems to be unaffected (installed simply renaming the 0.9.3 ebuild).
Comment 2 Kovid Goyal 2005-06-30 12:05:51 UTC
I have the same problem with an officejet 5500, using hplip-0.9.3. Downgrading
to 0.9.2 as Christian suggested fixes it

Comment 4 Luis Medinas (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-08-02 09:08:42 UTC
hplip-0.9.4 is in cvs. Looks like the upstream fixed your problems. Can you
please test it ? I will close the bug if you experience the same problems reopen
the bug .
