Description JR Boyens 2002-10-02 20:06:55 UTC
The ebuild for krb5 contains the cryptic comment:
#Don't install the ftp, telnet, r* apps; use pam instead

Which frankly makes no sense. PAM will not auth you against another server and
encrypt the session. PAM allows you to get tickets. PERIOD.

Am I missing something?

and a side note, can the apps be installed with the 'k' prefix persay?

Helps to reinforce the idea that your encrypted.

telnet, telnetd, ftp, ftpd, rsh, rcp, and rlogin. These are the apps that are
missing? Did I miss any?

It looks like it would be conveniet to rename them in any case, as they would
clash with installed versions from other packages. I'll work on getting those
integrated into the build.

Let me know if you have any further thoughts on the above.

This bug has been open for about 2 months now. Has there been ANYTHING done?
I've since hacked out the like the stops them from building, but I don't
understand why this was done in the first place. The person who checked it into
CVS was vapier, is his email then vapier@gentoo.org? I'm just curious as to how
this package is useable without the apps.

Looks like this was part of Bug 579, dependancy added.
Comment 5 Matt Keadle 2002-12-06 03:29:55 UTC
Done. Sorry for the delay. The client apps are now installed with the k prefix (ie. kftp, kftpd, ktelnet, ktelnetd, etc...)
