net-dialup/rp-pppoe-3.5-r7 is not stable on x86

reallife root # adsl-start
. Connected!
reallife root # adsl-stop
adsl-stop: No ADSL connection appears to be running

i habe the same problem with -r6, -r2 works fine.
Comment 5 Alin Năstac (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-13 06:22:34 UTC
you're wrong.
before declaring such statements, it is best to search bugzilla for similar problems

arches, please disregard comment #4
Comment 6 Michael Hanselmann (hansmi) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-13 07:06:49 UTC
Frank: look at bug 76025.
Alin: Including the bug number the next time wouldn't be bad. Sometimes it's hard to find something in bugzilla.
Comment 7 Alin Năstac (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-13 08:14:38 UTC
Michael: I've tried to find that bug, but for some reason bugs.g.o refuses to respond to my queries.
Comment 8 Gustavo Zacarias (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-14 09:26:15 UTC
sparc stable.
Comment 9 Simon Stelling (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-14 11:25:31 UTC

Hole system is running with ~amd64 on profile 2005.0. Everything else on this system is fine except rp-pppoe.

Okay, once more:

It is STABLE with linux-headers-2.6.8.1-r4

I am sorry for the long posting (just copy pasted it).

I will open a bug about broken linux-headers-2.6.10.

Regards
Christian

Stable on alpha.
Comment 14 Alin Năstac (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-24 06:03:08 UTC
mips arch, please test this one
Comment 15 Alin Năstac (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-28 11:51:25 UTC
mips, what I must do to get your attention? pleeease mark this as stable!
I have versions to erase and this bug is getting in my way...
Comment 16 Alin Năstac (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-28 14:09:38 UTC
arm arch, please mark it as stable.
seems that vapier made a mistake by deleting both hppa and arm.
Comment 17 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-03-01 14:15:55 UTC
no, i made a mistake by not also marking it arm stable
Comment 18 Alin Năstac (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-01 23:41:36 UTC
I swear I will erase other versions of rp-pppoe by the end of the week. Suddenly, this package will no longer be stable on mips.
I'm tired waiting someone to do this.
Comment 19 Hardave Riar (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-02 00:46:33 UTC
Stable on mips.

I have no clue if this actually works or not, but it compiled, so it's now marked stable.
Comment 20 Alin Năstac (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-02 01:16:04 UTC
fixed, finally
Comment 21 Stephen Becker (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-02 06:25:36 UTC
Just a quick comment, the package maintainer may choose to carry keywords forward at his/her discretion. In any case, I don't think any of the current mips developers (that are active for the most part) use pppoe, so we couldn't test it. In general, we don't mark anything stable that we can't test. The whole "it compiles, ship it!" thing isn't very good QA, but unfortunately we had to resort to it in this case.
Comment 22 Torsten Veller (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-02 07:17:24 UTC
"the package maintainer may choose to carry keywords forward at his/her discretion."

stephen, i don't know exactly what you mean. i think you mean that the mips keyword should be dropped if the arch team doesn't respond?

what would you say is a fair timelimit for getting an answer?
Comment 23 Stephen Becker (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-02 08:17:31 UTC
What I mean is the maintainer/herd can add the keywords themselves. They are supposed to be *the* experts on that package, thus they should know if there are any potential issues. A lot of bugs aren't arch specific anyhow, and those that are often hit multiple arches (stuff like endianness and/or 64-bit problems). I can say that on mips most "package foo won't work" bugs end up being toolchain or header problems.

Anyway, what all that means is if you (being the maintainer), are confident that the package should be stable and we (the arch team) don't have any way of testing it other than compiling it, then it is probably safe to go ahead and keyword it yourself. You also might have specifically talked to whoever added mips keywords in the first place, I believe it was tuxus, although he's barely around anymore these days.
