Code listing 30 and the paragraph preceding it describe the use of the DEBUGBUILD variable.  As mentioned in bug 18689, defining DEBUGBUILD is no longer used.  Users who wish to leave debug symbols should add nostrip to FEATURES.

It's been removed from Sven's rewrite.
