Description:   Opened: 2004-09-16 06:57 0000
I am having some major UI issues with net-www/mozilla-firefox-1.0_pre . Others
in #gentoo are having these issues, too, I hope they contribue to this bug.

What happened to me was that I went to start firefox the first time after
merging it. I had 0.9.3-r1 before. Running firefox from a terminal reported no
errors whatsoever, it simply silently exited. I ran it again, and firefox came
up.

I was expecting it to go to my group of home pages, but this didn't happen,
just a blank page. So I go to prefs, and notice that my home page is blank. I
also use a proxy here, so I went to those settings, and oddly no radio buttons
were selected at all (including direct connection) , and no text boxes were
filled in. I filled in the info, hit OK and nothing happened. The window with
the proxy settings was still there. I hit cancel, again nothing. I hit the X in
gnome 2.6 around this window, nothing.

In the end I had to kill it manually. I restarted firefox, tried to exit via
file / quit, and it did not quit. Tried again, nothing. Once again I had to
kill it.

I brought it up again, tried to quit, no go. So i decided to browse bugs,
serached, didn't get what I wanted, went to hit the back button, but it was
greyed out.

I further found that I could not get out of the preferances window at all.

So right now firefox is unusable to me.

If you are a user who has seen these or simiar UI issues, please add to this
bug, thanks.

------- Comment #1 From FieldySnuts 2004-09-16 17:45:47 0000 -------
I am experiencing similar but not nearly as severe issues on my home system
(that was my work system). The only problem I found with it on my home system
was that saying OK to prefs resulted in an error box that says that it can't
save prefs, and some other text, but it then crashes and I can't read that
fast.

i've actually, *gasp* switched to konqueror 3.3 as my web browser because of
these issues...

My useflags may be of interest:

*** Bug 64769 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***

------- Comment #4 From Andrew Sayman 2004-09-20 12:35:55 0000 -------
My bug was marked dup, but I think it's more like a depends or something.
Here's what I was experiencing:
mozilla-firefox-1.0pre is unable to find text in pages using the new Find bar.
Inputing text from the page and hitting Find Next or Find Previous does
absolutely nothing. The highlight button will highlight the search terms in the
page however.

------- Comment #5 From Andreas Eriksson 2004-09-20 14:59:01 0000 -------
I'm getting the same problem as comment #4, but for me highlighting doesn't
work.

------- Comment #6 From Rick Morra 2004-09-20 18:15:02 0000 -------
Also same problem as comment #4. (Highlighting works for me.)

------- Comment #7 From Frank Lomax 2004-09-21 20:05:00 0000 -------
I'm having exactly the same problem as in the original bug report. Previous
version (0.9-something) worked fine, but emerge updating to 1.0pre left me with
a completely useless firefox. emerge info is here:

------- Comment #8 From Edward Flick 2004-09-21 20:50:27 0000 -------
I am having the problems where the arrow keys, home and end keys don't work.
And I cannot save preferences.

------- Comment #9 From Dizzy 2004-09-22 03:00:32 0000 -------
I have the same problems as comment #8 and comment #4. I don't see any replies
about this issue from any gentoo devs. Is this issue known to the upstream ?
Where can we track it down (I know mozilla is actively using bugzilla for bug
tracking too).

The USE flags are: -debug -debug -gnome +gtk2 +gtk2 -ipv6 +java +java -ldap
-mozdevelop -moznoxft -moznoxft -mozxmlterm +truetype -xinerama -xinerama
+xprint

Also note that I am using X.Org 6.8.0 (no Composite extension activated tho as
my hw driver has no accel for RENDER extension).

------- Comment #10 From Mark Purtill 2004-09-22 20:38:24 0000 -------
I'm also having the "find doesn't work" problem. There is a bug for this on
the mozilla bugzilla: <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=260413>,
but no help other than the suggestion to download a mozilla.org binary.

------- Comment #11 From Trey Blancher 2004-09-24 14:28:15 0000 -------
I'm getting the same problem as comment #4 and comment #8. Although, the arrow
keys (and home/end keys) do in fact work if the focus of the page isn't in a
form input box, i.e. to navigate around in a text input box I need to use the
mouse. This applies to all input boxes, not just ones included on the page, so
arrow keys et al. don't work in things like the main address box, the search
toolbar box, or even the find box or any input box in the preference menu.

The find as you type error also exists with a brand new user. The preferences
can be saved if you delete the compreg.dat from your profiles directory.

------- Comment #15 From Jakub Moc (RETIRED) 2004-09-25 07:24:10 0000 -------
1/ Search (CTRL+F) does not work at all (except highlighting).

2/ Middle mouse button has gone mad. It is opening some never-seen before random URLs when middle-clicking on the tabs or in address bar.

3/ Closing the tabs by middle click has stopped working in default configuration.

Bugs 2/ and 3/ can be fixed by going to about:config, using filter:middle and changing middlemouse.contentLoadURL to false.

4/ Configuration changes cannot be saved after upgrade. I had to delete the complete profile to restore proper behaviour.

me as well. I did not notice this first, sorry. Search as you type is not

Another problem I had with the Find Bar is that the search term gets changed to
"undefined" every time a page is loaded.

I downgraded to mozilla-firefox-0.9.3 because the broken Find Bar was costing
me too much time. Now I just saw a security advisory concerning multiple
issues on all mozilla-firefox versions prior to 1.0_pre,
http://www.gentoo.org/security/en/glsa/glsa-200409-26.xml.

search as you type doesn't work.

Furthermore, opening, e.g. a pdf, gives you the dialog box with: Open with program and Save. In this dialog box, the OK button is always disabled, no matter which program or the save option I choose.

To be a bit louder on Comment #12, could a developer PLEASE comment? At this
point, we have no idea the status of this bug.

------- Comment #23 From Andrew Sayman 2004-09-28 13:18:41 0000 -------
Bug 64196 has a fix for the find toolbar not working.

Now we just need a patch that allows you to tell find to search for exactly what you type.

------- Comment #24 From Aron Griffis (RETIRED) 2004-09-28 14:49:21 0000 -------
Sorry it took so long to get this fixed. Please try 1.0_pre-r1 which should
fix a lot of problems. It has two major features:

1. pushes out mozilla.eclass change to disable typeaheadfind in myext. Don't
despair, typeaheadfind is still available, it's just not through that
deprecated extension.

2. depends on mozilla-launcher-1.20, which deletes any existing compreg.dat
from your profile dirs when it detects that firefox has been updated.

Please re-open this bug if you still have problems.

------- Comment #25 From SpanKY 2004-09-29 07:59:42 0000 -------
there's a lot of noise (and conflicting 'bug' reports) ... so i'd say
please open a new bug to cover issues 1.0_pre-r1 has

except for the 'find is broken' bug; that is Bug 64196
