According to these two sources: https://community.skype.com/t5/Linux/Skype-for-Linux-End-of-life/td-p/4586741 https://blogs.skype.com/news/2017/02/03/the-skype-you-love-is-getting-better-download-it-for-free-today/ Skype 4.3 and some other old versions of Skype on other platforms won't work anymore because of obsolete P2P architecture. It's relevant to this bug: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=546746 New Skype for Linux (since 1.16) does support 1-on-1 video calls to other platforms (for example Windows client or Android client), but the other side must have latest version (e.g. Skype 7.31 or even 7.32 for Windows).
I vote against this at least until microsoft's servers officially start rejecting obsolete versions from connecting.
....or upstream stops providing packages, since they are mirror restricted.
(In reply to Raymond Jennings from comment #1) > I vote against this at least until microsoft's servers officially start > rejecting obsolete versions from connecting. What do you think about the following for a public service announcement: +# Officially end of life upstream on 2017-03-01 and segfaults with +# dev-qt/qtwebkit:4[exceptions]. Grab your logs while you still can +# and migrate to alternatives such as net-im/skypeforlinux. +# Feel free to report should it still work after the deadline. +# Masked for removal in 30 days. Bug 546746 and 608174 +net-im/skype Otherwise people might be very surprised on March 1st.
tl;dr: nope https://community.skype.com/t5/Linux/Skype-for-Linux-End-of-life/m-p/4593845/highlight/true#M17642
Sergey's link points to a post made by a staff member of skype, so it's probably official enough. Please reopen if anything breaks on March 1st.
Reopening because of this: "Important notice: All Skype for Linux clients version 4.3 and older will be retired on July 1, 2017. To keep chatting, please install the latest version of Skype for Linux." Taken from official Skype Download page: https://www.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-linux/
It's not dead yet, and until it fails to download or the skype servers blacklist the older versions I don't think we should remove this. Marking as Upstream until validity of microsoft's announcement is confirmed or refuted, thanks for the heads up. I'll be watching this.
Masking means that you give the users of the package enough time in advance to move their business elsewhere. Waiting until day-0 is not doing anyone a favor. You can still drop the mask if Microsoft's promise is not kept.
Masked due to side issue of qt4 dependency, as well as this. Will lastrite once/if upstream proceeds with EOL
I'm wary about the proposed switch to net-im/skypeforlinux because of apulse. I won't install pulseaudio just for Skype to work, so does anyone have experience with net-im/skypeforlinux and apulse? Or does net-im/skypeforlinux not need pulseaudio anymore?
apulse works ok enough. Honestly though, skypeforlinux is worthless in terms of being better than the web version.
So July 1st has come and passed. What's a net-im/skype user's status today?
(In reply to Andreas Sturmlechner from comment #12) > So July 1st has come and passed. What's a net-im/skype user's status today? No problems whatsoever. Runs since days without any issues. Restarted it, logged right in. Seems to work, once again the announcement was just hot air. Maybe they will do something the next days. Who knows.
And this is exactly why I didn't want to lastrite it yet, because I suspected microsoft might pull this.

For the record microsoft has finally followed through with version banning this paackage from login.
