Description Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2016-02-15 11:33:14 UTC
Current way of specifying package names in summaries is highly suboptimal as it relies on reporters and bug wranglers to set the right categories and names. Also, it is fairly common to see typos on them that causes the bugs to be ignored if we search by their right names.

Other bugzilla setups like gnome or redhat ones already have the packages listed in components

Thanks a lot

I don't think this is the right solution for our package assignment issues.
Our nearly 19k packages simply outscale what Gnome and Red Hat are doing.

Having that many categories alone sounds too much. Then we'd have to change default assignees, CC list any time the maintainer changes (but also move bugs), rename the whole thing when it is package moved, and what about when the package is removed, keep the stale categories?

And then there's bugs where you can't identify a single package, or bugs that affect multiple packages. You'd end up with lots of "misc" and lots of tracker bugs and per-package bugs even for the little things.

And then, to select the correct package-component you need an autocompleted token-input field like at Red Hat has. Selecting from a dropdown with that many entries is not an option, especially when you need to start typing from the category name. Hard-requiring JavaScript also makes folks unhappy.

I'm sure you mean well, but this isn't something that's quickly done in exchange for a thank-you. Getting the category sync right is a major project, and not one I'd endorse.

Well, I guess it is harder than I thought before (as this is probably the only bugzilla or bug tracker I hit this issue, I wondered what was blocking it).

In summary, I remembered the issue again yesterday when I was looking to some bugs that were referring to packages that got removed by someone else years ago :S, and I was not able to think in any way of trying to solve that issue (and it is only one more) without having a way to "link" each package with their bugs :-(

Would it be possible to force people to fill the category&name properly from the start when they are filling the bug?

I mean, for bugs inside the current Components that will need package names, maybe at the time of filling the bug, bugzilla could check if the first chunk of the summary fits with any of the full list of packages and, if not, it could fail to submit the bug report and show an error to the user informing him.

Again: Forcing isn't going to work.

I think categories is out of the picture, this boils down to something you've already requested.
