Exact same problem here, both with 'emerge -v blackdown-jre' and in my case 'emerge system' (first install of Gentoo dist 2004.1 on my P4 laptop, java in USE). Tried various mirrors, no difference.

i believe the problem is in the glibc in the stage3 tarbal of 2004.1
i'm unable to still reproduce after i upgrade my glibc to the latest stable release 2.3.3.20040420
