Problem was solved in the thread mentioned.
Please add this to the pkg_postinst() section of the ebuild so other users know what to do:

If you the console stays black after switching to it when the nvidia X server has started please add:
Option      "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "TV"
to the device section of the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Hm, this isn't a kernel bug....

This workaround worked for me.  6106 drivers.
