I've modified my init.d/net.* scripts to set the essid and added the essid to the conf.d/net file.  Works everytime, and resolves the chicken & egg of setting essid/dhcpcd/net dependancies.

wireless config is now in baselayout-1.11.x

see /etc/conf.d/wireless.example
