This is probably related to an upgrade of libpcre recently,

can you try:

rm /etc/selinux/strict/contexts/files/file_contexts*.bin
(if you dont use strict, change that to the type you use)

Then update to sys-libs/libselinux-2.2.2-r5 which fixes the problem:

emerge -u =sys-libs/libselinux-2.2.2-r5

After you have updated to that version of libselinux, try emerging e2fsprogs again.
Comment 2 Nick Soveiko 2014-07-18 20:30:48 UTC
yep, this did the trick. thank you!

my records indicate that sys-libs/libselinux was upgraded to 2.2.2-r5 in june. dev-libs/libpcre was upgraded from 8.33 to 8.35 on july 17 and triggered breakage in portage. should i file a bug against libpcre then?
Comment 3 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-07-21 09:31:43 UTC
I hope that the change in libselinux will resolve this once and for all, although we might only know that when another upgrade is made.

This is not a pcre issue, but a SELinux utilities issue.
