Have tried repeatedly - more than 30 times to compile the r5 ebuild of X. I've got it to build just once, but with errors involving XtShellStrings and libXt.so.6. XFree86 command would run, but X would not run from startx - the libXt.so.6 would cause it to crash. Graphic config utility included with X produced the same results. The build process always bombs out while building the lib files, but not always in the same place or on the same file. Rest of system built fine. My only option at this point seems to install the 4.2.0 binary, wait for a fix, or looks for another distro to play with in the mean time. Machine is Athlon 850, 256MB RAM with VIA KT133 chipset. Please help!!!! hornsmoker
If it is dying at different places in the build process each time you try it, you very likely have defective RAM (use "memtest86" to test (see freshmeat)) or a flaky CPU. Compiling X is a very good hardware test. I'm marking this as WORKSFORME since you are having it die in various places which should not happen if this is a software problem.
