1) Download
32442259 May  3 12:54 /usr/portage/distfiles/thunderbird-source-0.6.tar.bz2

2) cp mozilla-thunderbird-0.5-r1.ebuild mozilla-thunderbird-0.6.ebuild

3) Edit mozilla-thunderbird-0.6.ebuild and set
EMVER="0.83.6"   and
SRC_URI="mirror://gentoo/thunderbird-source-${PV}.tar.bz2

4) ebuild mozilla-thunderbird-0.6.ebuild digest

5) ebuild mozilla-thunderbird-0.6.ebuild qmerge

6) Optional: read War and Peace, twice ;-)

7) Strange: about box still mentions v0.5 even though v0.6 has been installed and is being used

Discard 7)
run emerge --clean to discard previous files and about box and the rest will be OK.

Brad put in an initial version of 0.6 to portage.  My changes were more extensive (to converge with the mozilla and mozilla-firefox ebuilds) so I committed on top of his (taking his diffs into account, of course).
