It seems that media-fonts/freefont-ttf has moved to media-fonts/freefont: http://sources.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewvc.cgi/gentoo-x86/media-fonts/freefont-ttf/?hideattic=0 But no dependencies in other packages have been updated. I have hit this with dev-util/gource-0.38.
