it would be nice to be able to 'emerge gnustep' and get gnustep-base,
gnustep-appkit, gnustep-make, gnustep-back, etc ...

especially since the gnustep docs say you can:

http://www.gnustep.org/resources/sources.html#gentoo :

Gentoo

To get GNUstep, type this in a terminal:

    ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnustep

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS is only needed to get the latest (unstable) version. The ~x86
is the architecture so it should be changed to whatever is apropiate.

if we do not want a 'gnustep' ebuild, then we should get the gnustep website
updated.

newer package available: gnustep-env does what this wants

I'll get on changing the gnustep.org web site entry now...
