jack requires alsa-lib, alsa-lib requires jack (if jack is in USE). Is there a general approach to solving these issues yet? Thanks. S.

bug 35674 proposes splitting the jack pcm plugin out of alsa-lib, which would technically solve it w/ the appropriate deps updated.
I think a more generic solution to circular dependencies is needed. This isn't the only one at the moment, and more are going to turn up in the future. This has to become a general issue for portage developers.

Surely we can patch jack to come with the headers required from alsalib (or vice-versa).. Ultimately, I would say that this is an error on the part of the alsa developers.. alsa sits below jack, and any utilisation of jack should be in a seperate package? I doubt that the code itself contains a circular dependency. bah.. I dunno :-)
