Description Marijn Schouten (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-05-04 14:32:04 UTC
app-office/lyx-1.6.9 complains about missing article.layout upon first startup:

The layout file requested by this document,
article.layout,
is not usable. This is probably because a LaTeX
class or style file required by it is not
available. See the Customization documentation
for more information.
LyX will not be able to produce output.

installing dev-texlive/texlive-latex and starting lyx again made it not give this startup error, but after I removed dev-texlive/texlive-latex again I could not make the error reappear. I can produce a similar error when going to Help->User's Guide

The layout file requested by this document,
scrbook.layout,
is not usable. This is probably because a LaTeX
class or style file required by it is not
available. See the Customization documentation
for more information.
LyX will not be able to produce output.

Comment 2 pavel sanda 2011-05-15 14:50:20 UTC

The system reconfiguration has failed.
Default textclass is used but LyX may not be able to work properly.
Please reconfigure again if needed.

is what it says when I do that.
Comment 4 pavel sanda 2011-05-16 08:56:11 UTC
do you have enabled latex use flag, ie installed texlive?
Comment 5 pavel sanda 2011-05-16 09:02:28 UTC
i reread your initial message, so no you dont have latex installed. then its true what lyx says. you will be able to edit file, but you can not typeset which is natural when you dont want latex installed.
Comment 6 Marijn Schouten (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-05-16 09:54:24 UTC
Hadn't noticed the latex use flag on lyx before. IIUYC then without it Lyx isn't very useful.
Comment 7 pavel sanda 2011-05-16 10:09:20 UTC
you may want only edit file without pulling the whole tex tree. on the other hand you are right that latex should be recommended by default.

2.0.1 now has +latex so that should fix the "by default lyx is almost useless" problem
