I've upgraded vlc from 1.1.4 to 1.1.6 recently, and vlc does not disable the screensaver anymore during playback. Downgrading to 1.1.4 solve the issue. I'm running gnome-light-2.30.2-r1, with gnome-screensaver-2.30.2, on a stable x86 system. Seems to have nothing to do with vlc : /usr/bin/xdg-screensaver is running /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver-command --poke, but the --poke command does not work ! Gnome bug 579430 : https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=579430 Can you please assign this bug to the gnome team ? thanks.
Created attachment 261108 [details, diff] fix the gnome-screensaver-command --poke command I rebuilt gnome-extra/gnome-screensaver-2.30.2 with the attached patch (coming from comment 19 on the gnome bug), this fix the issue with xdg-screensaver, and with vlc 1.6.

This is bug 288706 but, as explained there, vlc should be fixed to not need --poke option
