Description Roland Tapken 2010-09-03 10:09:56 UTC
This bug is related to bug #335763.

When updating to >=sys-fs/udev-151-r4 using an older kernel (for example 2.6.30 build with genkernel) udev complains about kernel options CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED(_V2) being set, but it continues the update. This results in a system not being able to boot anymore since many entries in /dev are missing (in my case /dev/sd*).

Because this may be critical especially on headless maschines udev should cancel the update until a kernel is used that has been build without these options. An environment variable could be use to continue if the user knows what he's doing.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Update from udev-149 to udev-151-r4 using a kernel build with CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED
2. Don't pay much attention to udev's warning
3. Carelessly reboot the system before building a new kernel

Actual Results:
The system becomes nearly unusable as many device entries like /dev/sd* are missing.

Expected Results:
udev should have stopped emerge in step 1.

emerge --info from within a chroot environment using a rescue system:

udev-151-r4 and others have this:

# required kernel options
CONFIG_CHECK="~INOTIFY_USER ~SIGNALFD ~!SYSFS_DEPRECATED ~!SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2
        ~!IDE ~BLK_DEV_BSG"

so nothing left to do here
