Description nm (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-08-28 02:19:55 UTC
Pidgin 2.7.2 and up no longer seem to install a .desktop file. So Pidgin has disappeared from all my menus.

I searched everywhere in the usual FDO directories, but found nothing. "qlist pidgin" (from portage-utils) doesn't show any .desktop files. Does upstream no longer ship one, or does the ebuild not correctly install one?

Josh, is this dup of bug 322717? If yes, I'll finally find time to fix it somehow... If not, what USE flags do you use?

I dunno if this is it. My desktop runs 2.7.2, and the pidgin.desktop file is present in ~/.local/share/applications.

My laptop runs 2.7.3, and it no longer shows any menu entry because it's vanished from ~/.local/share/applications. I don't know why it's vanished from one machine but still appears on another. I suppose "qlist pidgin" won't display the .desktop entry for any files not owned by root, so now I wonder what else pidgin installs to ~/ that's not shown in the list.

Oh yes, USE flags for both are the same:

USE="dbus gtk perl python startup-notification xscreensaver -debug -doc -eds -gadu -gnutls -groupwise -gstreamer -idn -meanwhile -ncurses -networkmanager -nls -prediction -qq -sasl -silc -spell -tcl -tk -zephyr -zeroconf (-krb4%)"

Either some application copied .desktop file there or... this is some weird unknown bug. Pidgin should not install anything there and it never did this on my computer. So if that happens, please, open new bug report with verbose emerge full build.log (for us to see file installed in some /home/.../ directory).

I guess because upstream now installs localized .desktop files and they are missed in case pidgin is built with USE=-nls. USE flags confimed this guess, so this is duplicate and I'll think what to do with this situation. I think I'll force nls USE flag in case gtk is enabled (until we have EAPI=4 pkg_pretend to die there).
