When merging net-im/pidgin without the `nls' USE flag, it doesn't install a Desktop file into /usr/share/applications. Here's a snippet from the build log that confirms this: --- Warning: You have disabled the building and installation of translation data. This will prevent building pidgin.desktop and the GConf schemas. Be sure you know what you are doing. --- Unless a work-around is feasible, the ebuild should at least warn that no Desktop file will be installed if the `nls' USE flag is disabled, so that users aren't left scratching their head wondering where it went. This affects all versions of Pidgin currently in the tree. Though, I do believe older versions (which aren't in the tree anymore) were exempt.
