During configure, cmake errors out, complaining that it is not satisfied that proper versions of libkdcraw and libkexiv2 are available. Both are installed, and at version 4.4.5.

Right. Thank you. Seems like they forgot to update the corresponding KDE versions in the source README file (where I found that we need at least 4.4.2 for libkdcraw, and put that in the dependencies). Testing was done on 4.4.90, so... I'm raising the kde dependency in the sci overlay, and will restore the 1.2.0-r1 ebuild later on.
dependencies have now been bumped to kde-4.5. digikam-1.2.0 is also back in the overlay.
