Description Kete Tefid 2010-07-03 12:04:24 UTC
While one might find his or her video through tracker by typing its name and looking for it in "All Files" section of the gnome-tracker (tracker-search-tool), the software doesn't categorize any video in the "Videos" section.
Example:

tracker-search foo
It does find the foo.avi as one of the outputs.

tracker-search -s Videos foo
It can't find it.

Ultra-annoying...

Please use an up to date tracker (0.8.15), it solved a couple of problems I had in 0.8.9.

Upgraded. Nothing changed.

I have the most uptodate version i.e. 0.8.17 and still no solution.
This is really a bad bug which doesn't allow you to see only video files. So, what is tracker for?! This bug makes it pathetic.
Comment 6 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-09-24 09:28:53 UTC
since I started testing rygel, I found out I'm also impacted by this bug.

$ /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session tracker-search -v
Files: 0

Since I haven't found other people complaining about the issue with google, I think this should be brought upstream.

Maybe people are reluctant to do this. I have been suffering from this bug from the time I installed tracker.
As well as this bug, another one has appeared. Every time I log in to Gnome, tracker starts to reindex the whole data! And the pc suffers from a heavy hog then. I am wondering if I have to open another bug for that. What a mess...

this seems to be fixed in 0.9.33. Could you give it a shot ?

Thanks for the info.
Unfortunately tracker is broken. I and many other people are affected by :
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=339847
This prevents me from testing tracker. The above bug should be first fixed.
Comment 10 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-01-20 09:17:45 UTC
it doesn't stop you from testing new tracker releases...
Anyway, I've tested it myself with command line tools and rygel and it now works fine for what we are concerned about here. Closing.

Thanks for reporting.

If you are sure that it finds something when you enter:
tracker-search -s Videos foo
Then it is closed.
I have found reporting these types of bugs to gentoo system useless. Gentoo has nothing to do with "application bugs". What is the chance of relating a misbehaved but well-compiled application to getnoo? Almost zero. In fact I think when an application compiles just fine but runs awkwardly it should be reported to developers. I mean all the application bugs should be treated upstream. I was thinking so but gentoo forum convinced me otherwise. Now, I'm getting back to my own idea.
Thank you very much for your efforts.

checking with gentoo devs if nothing looks wrong in your setup is always a good thing but once that step is passed, upstream is indeed the best place to go. If you think filling bug reports just to get a gentoo dev to get a look at your problem is too much, I invite you to visit us on #gentoo-desktop for most freedesktop and gnome topics.

I'm writing so because I clearly understand that you i.e. gentoo maintainers are completely busy with other gentoo-specific-only problems so yes it would be too much to make you busier with a problem that has arisen from elsewhere. One of the bugs submitted by me took almost 6 months to be resolved. It means I should come over here and bother you less so you can fix things quicker! ;)
That's why after 7 years of using gentoo everyday, I've submitted only 4 or 5 bugs.
I really suggest everyone scrutinize the problem first by themselves then come here.
Sorry to drag it on and thank you again.
