Description dE 2010-04-22 05:02:40 UTC
Grub2 might be easier for a few people and GRUB is now deprecated, so I think it will be a good idea to make people aware of this by adding GRUB2 support in the handbook.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Just read the handbook.
Actual Results:
The string GRUB2, GRUB2 grub-9999 and it's variants are not found.

Expected Results:
A new Grub2 section along with LILO and the default GRUB.
Comment 1 nm (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-04-22 05:03:51 UTC
No. Grub2 is not even unmasked yet, much less ~arch or stable.

And until that happens, there's no way it'll ever be in our documentation.

Ok then, we'll reserve this bug for the mean time.
Comment 3 白川間瀬流 2012-07-04 18:03:42 UTC
i think the time come as grub landed in ~arch

First step to this will be to have a grub2 migration guide. Doug Goldstein has written up a grub2 migration guide which will be available on /doc/en/grub2-migration.xml.

Next step(s) will be to prepare updates on the documentation. We might want to do this as comments in the guide(s) so that updates are a matter of uncommenting it. Or just maintain patches.

swift,

What I've got are wholesale replacements of the existing grub instructions with grub 2 instructions with a link to the grub 2 Gentoo wiki for complex configurations (e.g. non-standard EFI setup) if that's acceptable.

@Doug: if you have such patches or documentation snippets, by all means please attach them. I have time the coming days to handle the documentation (probably going to have the handbook document both of them simultaneously so that we don't get into the situation that users with an older portage snapshot don't see grub legacy instructions and vice versa).
Comment 8 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-08-15 14:50:47 UTC
A first draft at http://dev.gentoo.org/~swift/tmp/bootloader.xml (or directly at http://dev.gentoo.org/~swift/tmp/bootloader.xml#grub2).

When you notice strike-through variables, like ${arch}, those will be substituted through the handbook with the right value, like "amd64" or "x86".

When grub2 is stabilized, I will remove the GRUB (legacy) references and make the GRUB2 one default.
Comment 9 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-08-15 17:06:11 UTC
Ok, got a few reviews all with "OK" so I committed the changes to the handbook.

Should show up on the site in an hour or so.
