After a most recent upgrade (I emerge kde 4.4.2), skype stopped working. When i try to load it, it gives the following error: skype: pcm_null.c:130: snd_pcm_null_start: Assertion `null->state == SND_PCM_STATE_PREPARED' failed and then shuts down. Perhaps this error is caused by some other update, but I could not identify anything else. Recompiling skype with static-qt does not help. Most probably the issue is triggered by some other upgrade. I am planning to go throught he emerge log of that day and try to find what else could have caused it.
So, I reviewed emerge log and I could not see what else could have caused this issue, except for an upgrade to the new kernel, where alsa-driver would sit: So, currently I have sys-kernel/tuxonice-sources-2.6.33. Upgrade also included updates to the following packages (in addition to kde), but I doubt they have anything to do with the issue: bison app-admin/system-config-printer-common dev-java/sun-jce-bin dev-java/sun-jdk I am just downgrading kernel to see if the problem goes away.
Never mind, I fixed the problem by deleting /root/Skype directory. Skype re-created it and now it works fine.
