Description peng shao 2010-03-20 22:19:54 UTC
After upgrading from gvfs-1.4.2 to 1.4.3 I noticed that now nautilus is not able to mount ntfs partition anymore. When I plug in my ntfs usb removable disk or simply click its icon in nautilus's side pane I got error message: Error mounting: mount: unknown filesystem type 'ntfs'. It looks like nautilus now is looking for the kernel-level ntfs support rather than ntfs-3g. Manual mount such as ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 ... or gnome-mount -d /dev/sdb1 is working well. gconftool-2 indicates
 fstype_override = ntfs-3g
 mount_options = [umask=222]

Simply speaking, I didn't change anything, just updating gvfs-1.4.2 to 1.4.3 causes this problem. If I downgrade gvfs back to 1.4.2 then this problem disappears(actually after I downgrade to 1.4.2 I reproduced bug 296153 but as I said in that bug page after restarting hald everthing is working well).

I re-compiled the kernel with ntfs support and this time nautilus is able to mount the disk automatically. It really looks like nautilus is trying to use something like mount -t ntfs instead of ntfs-3g for gvfs-1.4.3.

Thanks.

Reproducible: Always

I modified the title because after some research I realized it is actually because I use "gdu"(by default) for gvfs-1.4.3, and it looks like for some reason I couldn't make gnome-disk-utility to mount ntfs partition using ntfs-3g. I now temporarily use a workaround by

ln -s /bin/ntfs-3g /sbin/mount.ntfs

I don't know if this bug report should be closed because I really have no idea if this is the way gdu should be. I checked ubuntu and found they have this link. A dpkg -S indicates that link belonging to ntfs-3g. Perhaps we should consider add such link? The kernel level ntfs support seems to be useless for many people who would like to use their removable disk.

Anyway, if there is a configuration to tell gdu to use ntfs-3g instead of ntfs, please kindly tell me and ignore my report as invalid. Thanks.

I think this is a dupe of bug 304765 , but feel free to reopen if I am wrong
