I upgraded from kde-4.3.5 to 4.4.0 yesterday. Unmerged all packages as paludis does not dissolve the blocks automatically (-kdeprefix). After a successful "paludis -i kdebase-meta kmail" i tried to start kmail. This tried to start akonadi-server - which failed as there could not be found any akonadi-resources! After some search i found out that the requested resources come with kdepim-runtime. After installing that package, kmail started succesfully. So i think kmail should have a dependency on kdepim-runtime. Reproducible: Always
I can confirm that this solved the problem for me. I installed kdepim-runtime and restarted my KDE session. akonadi was running without error and kontact/kmail started correctly.

As i understand, kde-base/akonadi only installs the "akonadiconsole" and some libs not essential for kmail.
Correct - kdepim-runtime is actually akonadi, I'm fixing dep.
