I've attached the emerge log of xpdf, please have a look.

My use flags -

However, the problem does not persist in the unstable package of xpdf.

Infact from xpdf Changelog :

*xpdf-3.02-r3 (24 Aug 2009)

  24 Aug 2009; Peter Alfredsen <loki_val@gentoo.org> +xpdf-3.02-r3.ebuild:
  Add xpdf-3.02-r3, which is patched to work with >=poppler-0.11.3


r3 was replaced by r4 that fixes other bugs, but now that poppler 0.12.3-r3 is marked stable (on x86) also xpdf-3.02-r4 should be marked stable (at least on x86).

So app-text/xpdf-3.02-r2 should block the poppler upgrade, until -r4 is marked stable.
Any dev willing to perform this change in the ebuild?
