Description François Valenduc 2009-09-28 19:24:58 UTC
When I try to emerge nvidia-drivers with kernel 2.6.32-rc1, I get this error:
Makefile:210: *** ARCH changed from "x86_64" to "x86". Use "make mrproper" to fix it up. Arrêt.

This seems to happen for all packages containing extra kernel modules.

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 Sebastian Luther (few) 2009-09-28 19:48:37 UTC
Please provide "emerge --info nvidia-drivers gentoo-sources" (adjust the gentoo-sources to whatever kernel source you are using), the output of "eselect kernel list" and the build.log (see the end of emerge's error message).
Comment 2 François Valenduc 2009-09-29 04:54:53 UTC
The output of emerge --info is the following;
Portage 2.1.6.13 (default/linux/amd64/2008.0/desktop, gcc-4.3.2, glibc-2.9_p20081201-r2, 2.6.31.1 x86_64)

x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-185.18.31 was built with the following:
USE="acpi gtk (multilib) -custom-cflags"

I don't use gentoo-sources. I use my own kernel tree and I use the sources downloaded from kernel.org. As I already said, this is not specific to nvidia-drivers. The problem occurs with all extra kernel modules (ex: vmware-modules).
Comment 3 François Valenduc 2009-09-29 20:01:39 UTC
This problem seems to be caused by the following commit:
kbuild: save ARCH & CROSS_COMPILE when building a kernel (575543347b5baed0ca927cb90ba8807396fe9cc9).

If I revert it, ebuilds containing extra kernel module like nvidia-drivers or vmware-modules can again be built correctly.

Good find. Reverting that patch also fixes the issue for me.
