After upgrading terminal to 0.4.0 my background image wasn't visible. I tried to set a new one (jpg/png/gif), that didn't work too. Searching the internet I found Debian Bug 539646 and XFCE bug 5645, but because I can't swith composite on I can't confirm that has something to do with this.
