I encountered this bug in a different context but it boils down to the problem described and solved on the Red Hat tracker here: 
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=487720
The patch given there solves my problem.
This was also reported upstream and is fixed in trunk and the fix will be included in the next release.
But since it is unclear if there will be another release in the 1.2.x series I request the inclusion of the patch in portage.
