Description Joel Koglin 2009-06-22 01:23:35 UTC
The x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.552-r2 fails to build the fglrx module.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. cd /usr/src/linux
2. make mrproper (be warned this deletes kernel .config and .oldconfig)
3. configure kernel
4. mkdir _altkernel
5. make O=_altkernel && make O=_altkernel modules_install
6. cp /usr/src/linux/_altkernel/$arch/boot/bzImage /boot/gentoo/. (replace $arch with your arch)
7. edit lilo or grub to use this kernel
8. restart using this kernel
9. export KBUILD_OUTPUT="/usr/linux/_altkern"
10. emerge =x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.552-r2

Comment 1 Joel Koglin 2009-06-22 03:26:46 UTC
I copied my current kernels config into /usr/src/linux, enabled deprecated symbols in the kernel hacks section, rebuilt the kernel and reloaded. The same error persists. So this didn't have anything to do with KBUILD_OUTPUT and using an alternate dir for my compiled kernels.

I tried a few others and they all had the same error
x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.471.3
x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.552-r2
x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.552-r3
x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.573-r1 (doesnt work on 2.6.29 kernels)

also is it strange to anyone else that CROSS_COMPILE is missing the tail end "gcc" and LDFALGS isn't set even though it is in the emerge --info LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1"

*   Unable to emake HOSTCC=i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc
CROSS_COMPILE=i686-pc-linux-gnu- LDFLAGS=  GCC_VER_MAJ=4 KVER=2.6.29-gentoo-r5
KDIR=/usr/src/linux kmod_build

Comment 2 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-06-29 15:39:14 UTC
Please could you provide the complete build.log file from the failed build.
Comment 3 Wormo (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-07-02 06:33:06 UTC
FYI Joel: CROSS_COMPILE normally looks like that, it is a prefix used to generate program names other than just gcc, e.g. i686-pc-linux-gnu-ld
Comment 4 Szymon Jaranowski 2009-07-13 12:32:18 UTC
I have the same problem, so maybe I can help (I've decided not to start another bug, as the only difference is that I'am using x86_64 [on Core2 Duo]). Maybe my build.log can help:

I'm basically having the same problem here:
*  The die message:
*  Unable to emake HOSTCC=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc CROSS_COMPILE=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu- LDFLAGS=  GCC_VER_MAJ=4 KVER=2.6.29-gentoo-r5 KDIR=/usr/src/linux kmod_build

My emerge --info (I'm currently chrooted):
ubuntu linux # emerge --info
Portage 2.1.6.13 (default/linux/amd64/2008.0/desktop, gcc-4.3.2, glibc-2.9_p20081201-r2, 2.6.28-11-generic x86_64)

build.log attached!

I had problems with my kernel, had to activate PCI_LEGACY for pci_find_slot() and EXPORT_SYMBOLS, but everything is normal right now, except for these errors. Maybe the sourcecode was compiled and tested against an old gcc version? Maybe 3.X?

The structure fields which are missing here were removed from the task_struct structure during kernel 2.6.29 development. The package must be run with kernel 2.6.28 or earlier.

Here is the update which broke ati-drivers:
